Thrill of the Hunt: Vol 2
Good riddance, January | Thrifted finds and leave behinds | thrifting pro tip | what I'm loving
Thrill of the Hunt is a weekly publication by Eliza Morrill. Every other week, you can expect a Volume of “Thrill of the Hunt,” featuring a few musings, recent thrifted finds, and tips to help you curate a collected home. On the “in-between” weeks, you’ll find a longer-form article in your inbox tackling a single subject.
Thank you for being here!
January, Wrapped
We did it. We made it through January, which felt to be a year in and of itself.
Mike and I have been on a 30 Rock kick lately, and I am reminded of that scene wherein Liz says, “What a week, huh?” to which Jack responds, “Lemon, it’s Wednesday.”
January was packed.
NEW YORK: We rang in the New Year at Mike (my husband)’s parents’ home in upstate New York. Please don’t ask how many bagels I consumed during this trip. I am not at liberty to say.
FLU A: As we were pulling out of their driveway with our 4 children, beginning the 24 hour-trek home, Mike groans, “I think I have a fever.” Dear Reader, he was correct. Thus began The Drive Home From Hell™, followed by two weeks of illness. Yeah!
THE ACQUIRED HOME: I always love stopping by my sister’s store in Atlanta. We styled this plate cupboard (see it here) while my oldest made fun of us and begged to go eat dinner.
SNOW DAY!: It hasn’t snowed here in seven years. It was absolutely magical. Until it wasn’t. Turns out, I love the look of snow, but do not care for the amount of mud and laundry it begets.
THE MARTINS: A Bucket List item! We saw Steve Martin and Martin Short at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta. The second that Steve Martin walked out on stage, I burst into tears. I am who I am.
CLEAN OUT: I don’t know about you, but my closet exists in two states: a perfectly organized, mess-free oasis, or a hellhole of overwhelm that resembles the den of feral raccoons. I’ll let you guess how this started (I’m too ashamed to share the before photo.) I donated two giant bags to Goodwill, sold a few items, and was absolutely ruthless in the process. It. Feels. Glorious.
This, on top of our usual life’s chaos and the fact that we are still (somehow) living in very unprecedented times, made January an exhausting year.
Welcome, February. Please read the room and act accordingly.
Recent Finds and Leave Behinds
This was a great month of thrifting! I found some great things, donated a few pieces I didn’t need anymore, and left some pretty stellar items behind for someone else to score.
1.) I love this original watercolor I scored for $6. I’m not in love with the frame, but I can always change it up.
2.) This heavy, hand painted urn was $3. It will look great with an orchid in it.
3.) This set of 6 silver-plate goblets was $20, marked “SPAIN” on the bottom. I love!
4.) Loving this little dish for $3! I’ll put it beside my bed to hold my jewelry at the end of the day.
5.) A few adorable picture frames for 50 cents each.
6.) A walnut lazy Susan!!! $8.
7.) A set of 4 champagne goblets (they match the set above) for $20.
8.) Hand-stitched hand towels and cocktail napkins for $12. So fun for hosting and holidays.
9.) This GORGEOUS silver plate engraved platter for $12. It wasn’t this shiny when I found her… see the reel here!
1.) This framed print was $8 and so cool! The mat had some staining and I don’t need to take on another project (who is this girl with resolve!?) so I left it behind.
2.) Such a cute ladder-backed cane chair for $6.
3.) I kind of regret not buying this copper… thingy? $7. So cool.
4.) Almost grabbed this $5 plate for my plate wall, but thought better of it in the end.
5.) This cute little Dutch silver trio was $16.
6.) Loved this wooden inlaid box for $17.
7.) This green gingham wingback chair was $30. With the help of a Little Green Machine (on sale!), it could be stellar!

Thrifting Pro Tip:
Take advantage of Goodwill on Saturday.
Did you know that Goodwill’s Color of the Week is only 99 cents on Saturdays? Get there early for the best deals.
I love to stock up on DVDs for road trips with the kids - just be sure to check the back of them to make sure they’re not too scratched.
What I’m Loving:
Content: Colette’s Cocktails - last month, she did a “Damp January” series - where she shared a typical and non-alcoholic version of popular cocktails.
Streaming: 30 Rock on repeat. I’ve seen it a million times before, but always belly laugh with every episode. Side note: I once was an NBC intern for two summers at 30 Rock. I had the time of my life!
Reading: Emma on Audible. Narrated by Emma Thompson, it’s one of the only Jane Austen books I’ve never read.
Wearing: This amazing lip stain from Amazon. You’ll start out looking like a Goth Avatar, but trust the process.
Cooking: Everything I bought at our local Asian supermarket. We took the kids, and it’s their new favorite spot. Tonight, I made a soup with bok choy, mushrooms, noodles, and egg rolls. Every child ate it. SUCCESS!
Thank you all so much for reading! It really is an absolute delight to have you here. If you have any comments, content suggestions, or grievances to air, please leave a comment below. I’d love to hear from you!
Love all your thrifted finds! Unfortunately I’m not sure every goodwill has the same color/price policies. Way back in the day we had 49 cent and 99 cent items and then we switched to 50% off color of the week. I’ve never heard of 99 cents on Saturdays where I live. 😢
